18th Century Antiques

The eighteenth century was the last era of a Europe dominated by great monarchies of the ancien regime. In France and Spain, the Bourbons reigned supreme; in England, Georgian society was in full flight; while elsewhere in Europe, whether in Prussia, Russia, or Italy, strong monarchies held sway. The decorative styles associated with this time express the grandeur of the age, ranging from the Baroque of the early eighteenth century, through the Rococo of the middle decades, to the Neoclassical of the years before the triumph of the French Revolution.

On the other side of the globe, we see a plethora of unique exports from Chinese and Japanese manufacturers, bolstered by their governments in an effort to increase artistic export and trade with neighbouring countries. The Chinese porcelain trade, for example, exponentially grows through its relations with the Arabian and Islamic market despite rising political tensions.

Browse below to discover Mayfair Gallery’s extensive collection of eighteenth-century antiques, which includes examples from all corners of Europe—as well as pieces from as far afield as China and the Middle East.
