Description

The porcelain plaque is of rectangular form and depicts The Three Fates as three ladies after the painting by the painter and illustrator Friedrich Paul Thumann (German, 1834-1908). The Three Fates are Ancient Greek mythological goddesses. The eldest is named Atropos, who is depicted on the left holding a pair of scissors to cut the thread of human life. The thread is spun by Clotho, the youthful beauty standing to the centre, and sitting to the right is Lachesis, who measures the thread. The plaque bears the sceptre mark of KPM porcelain to the reverse, and is set in a giltwood, Rococo style frame carved with floral and shell motifs.
