This elegant 19th century plate comes from the service for the order of Saint Alexander Nevsky crafted by the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St Petersburg, Russia.
The centre of this cream, circular plate is painted with the star of the Imperial Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky. First awarded in 1725 by Empress Catherine I of Russia (1684-1727), this was an order of chivalry of the Russian Empire awarding Russian citizens for their service, mostly political or military. First envisaged by Emperor Peter I of Russia (1672-1725), the order is in memory of the works of Saint Alexander Nevsky (1221-1263) who defended Russia against foreign invaders. Around the star is the order’s motto ‘For Labour and Fatherland’ alongside the imperial cypher of Alexander II.
The plate's circumference is decorated with a red draped sash, and its lower part features the order’s cross. The scalloped borders are gilt, adding a touch of refinement to the piece.
The reverse of the plate is marked with the maker’s mark and red inventory numbers.
This plate, beautifully painted and showcasing an important part of Russian history, is a desirable addition to any collection.
