'Along the Riva degli Schiavoni', Italian painting of Venice
£12,000
This beautiful painting, depicting the Riva degli Schiavoni, is a superb example of a veduta, or a view of Venice often purchased by well-heeled tourists in the 19th Century.
This beautiful oil painting is set in Venice, with a vantage point above the Riva degli Schiavoni as the setting. To the right rises the Column of San Marco, while in the distance the edifice of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute looms into the sky.
On the Riva degli Schiavoni, several groups of people gather and mingle, the focus of their attention evidently the boats lined up along the side of the canal. The painting is firmly in the mould of Canaletto and other artists who painted vedute of Venice: such works were tokens taken home by young Grand Tourists. The painterly style is fine and accomplished, and the colour palette vibrant.
The work, which is monogrammed lower right ‘A.H.’, is contained by an ornate giltwood frame.
