The glass beaker takes a cylindrical shape and features an enamelled decorative panel around its middle. The panel depicts a landscape scene of the Burgtheater (also known as the Austrian National Theatre) in Vienna. The foreground of the scene shows couples in period dress standing on a hillside. This enamelled scene is framed by gilt borders with floral patterns, the bottom of which is inscribed 'Die K. K. Burg in Wien', translating as 'The Burgtheater in Vienna'. The beaker’s rim is decorated with a gilt floral band and its golden yellow base is finely cut.
This model is based on a beaker which was decorated by the prestigious glass-maker, Anton Kothgasser (Austrian, 1769-1851). Kothgasser began his career as a painter at the Vienna Porcelain Factory in Austria, but in 1813 he opened a studio and began to create finely painted glass beakers. These were intended as beautiful, high-quality souvenirs for tourists visiting Austria.
