Antique Austrian silver and enamel cane by Georg Adam Scheid
£18,000
This Art Nouveau cane, crafted by a skilled Austrian silversmith, features a playful fig-shaped handle, its beauty accentuated by intricate enamel and silver detailing.
This striking Art Nouveau cane, crafted around 1900, is the work of renowned Austrian gold and silversmith Georg Adam Scheid (1838–1912). After an early partnership with jeweller and fellow silversmith Michael Markowitsch, Scheid established his own thriving firm in 1882, specialising in objets d’art and luxury collectibles, including this exquisite walking stick. His craftsmanship was widely celebrated, with his work exhibited at prestigious events such as the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle.Â
Topping this elegant cane is a finely crafted fig-shaped handle made from silver and rich purple enamel. Encased in gracefully swirling silver leaves, the design evokes a strikingly lifelike appearance. The shaft, carved from deep-brown hardwood and skilfully shaped to resemble bamboo, adds an organic touch, while a metal ferrule at the base protects the wood from damage.Â
The silver is stamped with the maker’s mark ‘G.A.S.’ for Georg Adam Scheid, alongside the ‘Diana’ hallmark, certifying its silver purity.
Of exceptional quality and craftsmanship, this distinguished walking stick is a remarkable addition to any fine collection.
