Description

This elegant European cane was crafted in the late 19th century, a period when the Belle Époque style—characterised by its grandeur and sense of optimism—deeply influenced the decorative arts.

The slender handle is crowned with a faceted amethyst, encircled by a delicate band of petite pearls. The gemstone shimmers beautifully, reflecting light with superb brilliance. Amethyst is traditionally associated with happiness, wealth, and love, while pearls symbolise beauty and purity, adding layers of meaning to this exquisite piece. Below the handle, gilt metal wraps around the wooden shaft, enhancing its luxurious appeal. The upper portion is adorned with an intricate laurel and ribbon garland arranged in a swirling motif, followed by gracefully draped ribbon-tied floral garlands that transition into an elegant openwork design. The gilt metal also frames a small eyelet, designed to accommodate a wrist cord for convenient carrying.

A small metal ferrule at the base further attests to the cane’s late 19th century origins. During this period, as roads were increasingly blacktopped and less prone to mud, ferrules became shorter, no longer needing to protect as much of the shaft from the elements.

With its refined craftsmanship and sophisticated design, this cane is a remarkable addition to any collection, embodying the grace and opulence of the Belle Époque era.
