Antique cloisonné enamel Chinese bowl with Arabic inscriptions
£4,500
This beautiful bowl, decorated with delicate cloisonné enamel designs, is a superb example of Chinese craftsmanship intended for export to an Islamic market.
The bowl is of traditional form, with a bulbous body set above three feet and a rim mounted with twin looped handles. The bowl is crafted from bronze, which is gilt to the feet, the rim, the integral handles, and the two shaped cartouches to the front and reverse of the body. The surface of the bowl is profusely decorated with cloisonné enamel: scrolling arabesques and flowers of a variety of types are set above the turquoise ground. The twin large cartouches contain embossed Thuluth Arabic script, indicating that the piece was produced for the Islamic market.
The bowl is signed underside with a mark in traditional Chinese script.
