This charming, naturalistic painting of a church nestled in a wooded landscape was created in the mid-19th Century by a painter in the English School.

Description

Painted in landscape format, this picture depicts a church with a porch off its nave and a crenelated tower with Gothic windows. This church is located within a walled enclosure in a woodland setting. In the foreground, a man is pictured cutting up a tree for firewood, accompanied by a woman and child. Birds fly above the church's tower, as though scattered by the ringing of the bells. The canvas is signed ‘J.F/ 1847’ in the lower right corner.

The painting is displayed in a giltwood frame which is intricately carved with leaf-and-dart bands, scrolling leafy vines and cartouches. The frame is fitted with a plaque, which is inscribed ‘Chapelle dans les Bois/ Ecole Anglaise’.
