£25,000
Embracing the opulent Louis XVI style, this centrepiece features two enchanting cherubs and exquisite, intricate details that elevate its elegant design.
Crafted in the Louis XVI style, this exquisite centrepiece is the work of Mathurin Moreau (1822–1912), a renowned French sculptor celebrated for his mastery of the academic style. Coming from a family of distinguished sculptors, Moreau was highly regarded in his field and was awarded a medal of honor by the Salon in 1879.
The centrepiece rests on a shaped gilt-bronze base with circular feet. Its circumference is adorned with intricate floral swags, each side featuring a central laurel leaf wreath. Above, a pair of cherubs reclines gracefully, each facing away from the other. Delicately draped in flowing fabric, one cherub rests his chin in contemplation, while the other gazes toward his companion. Their outstretched wings provide support for the bowl that crowns this remarkable piece.
The pierced and gilded bowl showcases an elegant latticework pattern, with its shaped edges serving as handles. A gilded circular mount at the centre of the inside enhances its refined design.
The base is signed ‘Math. Moreau’ for the maker.Â
A work of outstanding quality, this antique makes a magnificent addition to any distinguished interior.
