Antique French ormolu, marble and glass mantel clock
£6,500
This marble and glass mantel clock is a beautiful piece of design, with finely-cast ormolu mounts and a charming sculpture of a putto playing the cello.
The mantel clock stands on a rectangular white marble base, decorated with an ormolu (gilt bronze) openwork panels, which feature flower wreaths flanked by scrolling foliage. The base is set on four ormolu beaded toupie feet.
Above, the rectangular clock case is composed of bevelled glass panels, enabling the viewer to see the clock’s ormolu sun-burst pendulum. On its front, the case is mounted with a circular white enamel dial, which features Arabic Numbers, linked by painted flower swags, and signed ‘A Paris’. The glass case is decorated, below the dial, with two ormolu foliate scrolls with cockerel heads. An ormolu crinkled ribbon bow, tied with flower festoons, is positioned above the dial. The sides of the case feature similar motifs, of ormolu ribbons tied with flowers.
The glass case is topped by a foliate ormolu frieze, upon which stands the sculptural ormolu figure of a winged putto. The putto has his eyes closed, and he leans forward to play a cello, which is draped with fabric and flower swags.
