This fine porcelain plaque depicts the Finding of Moses: a young woman, the Pharaoh’s daughter, sits by a shoreline with the infant Moses, who rests cheerfully in his wickerwork basket. The plaque is superbly painted, with the scene rendered in fine, delicate brushstrokes and a bright, colourful palette.
The plaque is contained by a highly elaborate carved Black Forest wood frame. The frame is imitative of a classical ruin: the entablature, held aloft by the twin columns that flank the plaque, crumbles under the pressure of a growing palm tree—the exotic palm hinting at the Egyptian context of the scene contained within.
The reverse of the plaque is impressed ‘319’.
