This wonderful Italian oil painting of Alphonsus Liguori is contained within a superbly ornate French Gothic Revival frame, which is intricately pierced and enamelled.
This beautiful oil on panel painting depicts Alphonsus Liguori, an Italian bishop, theologian, and spiritual writer who lived from 1696 until 1797. Liguori, one of the most widely read Catholic writers, was canonised in 1839. Liguori is portrayed in his conventional manner: he sits at his desk with a quill in hand, while an open book, a devotional picture of the Madonna and Child, and a crucifix are set about him.
The painting, which was probably produced in Italy during the late eighteenth century, is set within a French late nineteenth century Gothic Revival frame. The frame, of gilt metal, is profusely pierced and enamelled. The frame is surmounted by three Gothic style crowns.
