Pair of ormolu and marble candelabra by F. Barbedienne
By Barbedienne, Ferdinand (French, 1810-1892)
£12,000
These distinguished antique candelabra demonstrate a wonderful sense of balance and beauty, elements typical of Barbedienne's fine Neoclassical style work.
The fine Neoclassical style candelabra in this pair are crafted from ormolu and red griotte marble. Each candelabrum features a griotte marble plinth-form base, raised on four ormolu acanthus feet, adorned with a laurel frieze, and featuring fluted sides. The base of each supports the body proper of the candelabrum, which is modelled as an ovoid vase moulded in the round in the manner of Clodion with low relief classicising sculpture. This vase-form body supports the candelabrum head, which issues five light branches, each ornately scrolled and moulded with foliate detailing.
