Antique Limoges enamel portrait painting in giltwood frame

This beautiful enamel painting depicts a young woman walking through a woodland scene, carrying a child on her back. The image is cropped so that the woman is seen from the waist up, and her face is turned in profile.

The lady in the painting wears a light pink dress and jacket, and a similarly coloured bonnet. She raises her right arm to her left shoulder, where she holds the hand of the child on her back. A thoughtful, distant expression plays on the woman's face.

Clutching onto the lady's back is a young boy, presumably her son. His hair is blond, like the woman's, and he wears a light brown sun hat. The boy looks out and engages directly with the viewer.

In the background, there are trees to the right and a clearing to the left, which opens out onto a view of a lake. The backdrop has been painted with broader, more expressive strokes than those smaller, more considered marks used to depict the figures.

This enamel painting has been set within a giltwood frame, which is decorated with beading, twisted rope-like borders and foliage. The back of the image is indistinctly signed. It is possible to make out 'Lady Payne', but the rest of the writing is unclear.
