The piece is skillfully carved from the egg of a Rhea, a large bird native to South America. It is painted on the outside with various insects, birds, and animals. A leaf pattern joins these painted depictions of fauna. The egg sits on a circular base and features a finial to the top, both of which are decorated in a similar way. The egg was carved by Ad Nanning and painted by the Dutch artist Koosje Klos.
Several eggs by the two artists can be seen in the Depot Pohl-Ströher Museum in Gelenau, Germany.
