Antique Neo-Grec marble and ormolu centre table by Barbedienne

This exquisite centre table was crafted by Barbedienne, one of the most esteemed bronze foundries of the late 19th century. The design, however, is credited to Louis-Constant Sévin (French, 1821–1888), who served as chief designer at the Barbedienne foundry during the 1860s. The piece is a celebration of the Neo-Grec style, which flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and is distinguished by its intricate use of Classical Greco-Roman motifs.

Crowning the table is a striking rouge marble top, bordered with rare jasper, a highly unusual material choice for a piece of this kind. Graceful ormolu rosettes are mounted at intervals along the jasper border, adding a refined decorative accent.

The table’s frame is richly adorned with classical figures, all hallmarks of the Neo-Grec aesthetic. Its four distinctive satyr monopodia legs are rendered with exceptional skill, their finely sculpted details clearly visible. Flowing scrolls and elegant stretchers extend toward a central figure draped in flowing robes, further enhancing its commanding presence. Each leg ends in lion paw feet, traditionally regarded as symbols of power and prestige.

One of the stretchers bears the signature ‘F. Barbedienne’, affirming its authenticity.
