This exceptional cane crafted around 1900 during the height of the Art Nouveau movement, showcases key features of the period.
The nephrite handle is masterfully carved to depict a charming frog perched atop a flower. Its hind legs wrap around the stem, while its head peeks above, framed by the flower’s curve, which forms the handle. Exceptional attention to detail is evident in the frog’s anatomical features, as well as in the delicate rendering of the flowers. The naturally occurring black speckles in the nephrite further enhance the piece’s visual appeal. Nephrite is thought to symbolise health and abundance, much like frogs, which are believed to bring wealth and good luck, adding an extra layer of meaning to this antique.
The handle is complemented by a cream-coloured enamel collar, elegantly framed by two bands of shimmering diamonds, lending a touch of luxury to the piece. The slender hardwood shaft culminates in a brass-toned metal ferrule.
Canes with intricately ornate handles, such as this one from Mayfair Gallery’s collection, were typically created for decorative rather than functional purposes. Their fine craftsmanship and captivating design are highly sought after by collectors, making this antique a particularly desirable addition.
