This fine and unusual mantel clock depicts Cupid with his arrow riding a snail, all set on the cylindrical clock case. The case itself is decorated with emblems of love such as hearts and cupid arrows, and is supported on four snail-shell feet.
The snail has often been associated in art with the Virgin Birth- as a symbol of purity- because people couldn't comprehend how snails reproduced. It is also known as a reminder of patience and using time wisely, in this example appropriately being placed atop a clock.
The endearing message in the clock as a whole can be interpreted as in order to conquer love one must go about it patiently and strategically.
