Description

Standing on toupie feet, this buffet cabinet is crafted from mahogany and is richly decorated with gilt bronze foliate and scrolled mounts. Below a rounded rectangular grey marble top are two frieze drawers with ormolu handles, as well as an open mirror-backed shelf. Below is a pair of lockable parquetry cupboard doors with ebony border, with the sides of the cabinet similarly-decorated.

It was crafted by distinguished French furniture manufacturer Mercier Frères, established in 1828 by Claude Mercier. It was recognised as one of the leading Parisian firms of the 19th century, participating in most of the major International Exhibitions of the fin-de-siècle.

A label to the inside of one of the drawers reads 'AMEUBLEMENTS DE STYLE / Meubles, Sieges, Tentures / MERCIER FRERES / 100, Faubourg St. Antoine, 100 / PARIS'.
