This elegant European jardinière is designed in the Chinoiserie style and is adorned with scenes of Chinese scholars set within traditional Chinese landscapes.
This fine terracotta jardinière is formed and decorated in a distinctly Chinese style. Such Chinoiserie pieces were particularly popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The present jardinière features an elliptical, quatrefoil form, with the interior of the jardinière finished with lustrous white glaze. The exterior of the jardinière features a red ground adorned with scenes of Chinese scholars in traditional landscapes, complete with flowers and other foliage. The jardinière is raised on four moulded feet, and features twin handles in the form of knotted serpents.
The jardinière is marked with an impressed 'G' as well as a crenellated crest inset with a stylised 'T'.
