This humble, delicate, yet beautiful piece is a delightful nineteenth century antique ware. Crafted as circular porcelain plate, it is banded with an ornate border comprising a rich blue ground that is articulated with a fine gilded rim.
The centre of the piece features a a painted scene depicting a pastoral landscape with two peasants situated in the foreground. With a humble thatched barnhouse in the middle distance, the landscape extends into a forest in the distance across and flat plain.
Two labourers, popular subjects often romanticised in the art of Russia in this period, stand in the foreground, with the elder of the two resting on a staff. A fine decorative piece, this porcelain plate is a charming example of 19th century decorative arts.
