This Persian pencase, known as a Qalamdan, is beautifully decorated with an intricate gold inlay and opens to reveal antique Persian writing instruments.
The Qalamdan takes a typical, rectangular shape with rounded ends, and is crafted from damascened, or hammered, iron. It has a sliding tray which opens to reveal a a number of iron instruments cased within. The exterior of the case is decorated with a gold inlay which depicts figures, foliage, animals and birds. The piece dates from the Qajar period in 19th Century Iran, and is known for being a period in which art and craftsmanship flourished.
