This fine nineteenth-century porcelain plaque is painted in a manner that recalls the art of earlier centuries. The composition portrays two figures: a man, who leans out of a window, and a woman, who leans on the ledge towards him. The figures wear Renaissance style clothing, which fits with their surroundings: they are in a city, perhaps one in Germany or the Low Countries. The painterly manner is fine and accomplished, while the subdued colour palette and chiaroscuro lighting effects create a feeling of evening intimacy.
The plaque is contained within a fine ebonised wood frame and is signed lower right ‘R. Haak’.
