This ormolu (gilt bronze) mantel clock is a unique piece of design, which takes the form of an ancient Roman building. It features a line of four fluted Doric columns, with one pair set slightly in front of the other. These stand on a tall plinth and support a dilapidated arcade. Ivy climbs up the plinth and wraps around the column shafts. A circular white enamel dial is positioned between the front two columns. This features black Roman Numerals and a serpent-shaped hour and minute hand. It is set within a leafy frame and a pendulum, terminating in a classical mask, hangs in the space below.
The clock's movement is stamped with the maker's name ‘Roblin/ A Paris’. Roblin was a prestigious horology firm, which was active in the late 19th Century in France.
