Description

This small icon of ‘Christ Pantocrator’ or ‘Christ in Majesty’ was created in Russia in the 19th Century. Christ is depicted as a half-length figure with a painted face and hands. Christ looks out at the viewer with a serious and contemplative expression on his face. He holds the Book of Gospels in his left hand and blesses with his right. While the Gospels represents how we will be judged, the hand raised in blessing symbolises Christ’s forgiveness and love of mankind. By combining the two, Christ is depicted as a figure who is both divine and human.

In this icon, Christ’s painted face is surrounded by a silvered foil halo. He wears an embossed gilt foil robe and holds the gilt foil Gospels, the cover of which is stamped with a crucifix. The figure of Christ is framed by a rectangular gilt foil border which is decorated with foliate patterns and two Russian inscriptions. This is contained within an outer border which is covered with three-dimensional painted paper flowers. The icon is displayed in a glazed wooden frame.
