Description

The finely wrought 18 piece parcel gilt service, decorated with Russian rinceau motifs in the Niello technique

The Niello technique dates to the time of the ancient Egyptians, who are credited with its creation. Spreading throughout Europe during the Iron Age, it was widely used as a decorative technique in the Renaissance period. In 19th and 20th century Russia, Niello works were crafted in the town of Tula, leading to the term "Tula silver".
