Animal Sculpture

Animal sculpture has a long history, but perhaps reached its peak as an artistic form during the nineteenth century, when artists known as animaliers became recognised and widely celebrated for the breadth and beauty of their skill.

Animal sculpture, also known as animalier sculpture, may refer to large and impressive equestrian sculptures, or to delicate jewelled portrayals of birds such as hawks, or indeed to quirky Victorian majolica pieces, or to Meissen porcelain dogs. The term encapsulates a broad variety of genres, styles, and materials, and Mayfair Gallery’s extensive collection of animal sculpture includes examples of all types, from large bronze horses to diminutive porcelain groups.
