Classical Sculpture

The term classical sculpture brings to mind fragments of marble figures from ancient Greece, or proud bronze portraits from the time of ancient Rome. The phrase refers not only to ancient pieces, but also to sculpture created in the style of ancient pieces. The style of classical sculpture was a major influence on the Renaissance, whether in the sculpture of Donatello or Michelangelo, and has continued to influence sculpture to the present day. Classical sculpture evokes images of figures standing in contrapposto, of motifs and stories drawn from classical mythology, of calm expressions and elegant repose.
