Crafted in the late Victorian era, this elegant cane features a hidden functional element within its handle. Walking sticks with additional functions, like this example, are typically called system canes or gadget canes.Â
The handle is expertly fashioned from silver, with a hinged lid showcasing an intricate repoussé design—a technique where the silver is shaped from the reverse side to create a raised pattern. The lid is adorned with a striking lion’s head, its detailed mane adding a sense of grandeur. Two small holes on either side of the face allow for the attachment of a wrist strap, which would have assisted in both carrying the cane and opening the lid.Â
When lifted, the lid reveals a beautifully engraved watch face, featuring bold black Roman numerals that contrast elegantly against the silver border. The underside of the watch case, as well as the silver collar, is intricately engraved with scrolling, nature-inspired motifs. The collar bears the inscription: ‘J.C. VICKERY.179.181.3 REGENT ST’, likely identifying the retailer of this piece.Â
An ebonised wood shaft, gracefully tapering towards the base, completes the design and is fitted with a protective metal ferrule.Â
With its ingenious concealed timepiece and exceptional craftsmanship, this antique cane is a remarkable acquisition for any horology enthusiast or collector of unique Victorian curiosities.Â
