Description

This small tazza combines a silver-gilt carousel frame with a ribbed agate bowl, and is incredibly detailed even on the miniature scale.

The tazza bowl itself is crafted from agate of a deep red-orange shade, that provides a pleasing contrast to the shining gilt and stones below. The agate has been carved into a shallow circular dish, with fluting to the exterior.

The bowl sits within a pierced foliate support, which extends into an openwork carousel design with four horses. Sitting within the centre of the carousel is a finial, modelled as a bird perched on a tree. The carousel is applied with several circular garnets and turquoise opals, adding further luxury to the piece.

The entire composition sits on a circular silver-gilt base. Connecting the carousel to the base is an openwork shield-motif fence, applied with further semi-precious gems in between. The base itself features trefoil arch repoussé decoration, inset with four additional gemstones. The piece stands on four, winged cherub feet.

This beautiful piece showcases the wonderful decorative wares being produced in Vienna in the late 19th century.
