Art Deco Antiques

Art Deco originated in France at the beginning of the 20th century and had a profound influence upon the visual appearance and design of architecture, fashion and even more mundane, everyday objects. Visually, Art Deco can only be described as an amalgamation of many different styles. Combining elements of Modernism, Cubism and Fauvism, as well as more the traditional Louis XVI style and Asiatic design, Art Deco became symbolic of modern luxury, glamour and technological progress.

Also known as style moderne, the Art Deco originated in the 1920s, following the repression of the First World War. Its most distinguishable features include simple, clean shapes, geometric design, often using varied man-made and natural materials, such as plastics, ferroconcrete, silver, obsidian, chrome, and rock crystal.

Perhaps the most iconic of Art Deco designs, the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building are the architectural results of the movement in New York. Art Deco soon lost popularity with the beginning of World War II in 1939 but the style continues to enjoy great influence over decorative art, jewellery, and fashion, right up to the present day.
