Moreau, Mathurin (French, 1822-1912)

Mathurin Moreau was an important French sculptor of the 19th Century. He was born into a family of sculptors in Dijon, France: his father, Jean-Baptiste Moreau as well as his brothers Auguste and Hippolyte were all celebrated sculptors in their own right.

Mathurin exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1848, where he was starting to make for himself a reputation as a skilled bronze sculptor working in the Academic style.

In 1878 Moreau was made mayor of the 19th arrondissement in Paris, where there is still a street named after him.
