Cornicelius, Georg (German, 1825-1898)

Georg Cornicelius (b. 1825) was a prestigious 19th Century German painter.

Born in Hanau, Georg was the son of esteemed porcelain painter Friedrich Cornicelius. As a young man, Georg Cornicleius attended the Drawing Academy of Hanau between 1838 and 1848. In 1848, Cornicelius continued his artistic education at the Academy of Antwerp, after which he travelled to France and Italy before returning to his hometown of Hanau.

Cornicelius quickly garnered a prestigious reputation for his exceptionally skilled portraiture, and in 1872 the Drawing Academy of Hanau appointed him an honorary member, later making the painter titular professor of the Academy. In the 1880s, Cornicelius established and directed his own private paining school, which he ran for several decades. Today, many of the painter’s works are found in major art exhibitions in places such as Munich, Dusseldorf and Berlin.
