Harusada, Hasegawa (Japanese, 1800-1883)

Hasegawa Harusada was already 68 years of age at the dawn of the Meiji era but appears to have made rapid changes to his production in order to meet the new demands of the global marketplace. Dramatically cast bronzes of this type were especially highly praised at international exhibitions such as the Vienna Weltausstellung (World Exposition) and the Philadelphia Centennial International Exhibition of 1876, where they were described as 'the most marvelous objects here'.
