Return To Glossary

Jean-François Robert was a 19th Century French enamellist, who was a decorator of porcelain at the Sèvres Porcelain Factory between 1807 and 1843. In 1837, Robert developed a technique of enamelling with a low melting point to decorate crystal, after which he set up his own workshop for decorating glass vessels and windows. He became the main decorator for Launay and Hautin et Cie, in addition to decorating opalines for Baccarat between 1843 and 1855. Robert’s skilful enamelling technique became famous, and was widely copied both in France and abroad.
