With a pierced and carved door panel to the front, depicting interior scenes set amongst ornate floral scroll work, this exceptional piece is a large Chinese antique cabinet, crafted from boxwood, hardwood, and ebony, in the early twentieth century.
The top of the cabinet is crafted in the form of a pagoda roof, and features pierced roof ridges and alongside etched panels. The pagoda type-roof is topped with two stylised dolphins, and two flanking fret cut panels; the centre bears three immortals in relief, and the flaring roof is surmounted with a dragon. The central section features a cupboard door, a drawer and ten vacant compartments; the base bears a pierced open work drawer, and four vacant compartments.
The whole cabinet is raised on stylised cabriole legs, which are profusely inlaid with dragons, bats, fish, birds, and flowers. An outstanding decorative storage piece, this beautiful Chinese antique is remarkable for the skill in the carving, the wonderful combination of materials, and the sophistication and style in its design.
