Description

This exceptionally finely carved Carrara marble bust was created in Italy during the 19th Century. The bust is after the so-called 'Apollo Belvedere', a full-size Roman original carved during the early 2nd Century CE that portrays the Greek god Apollo. The original sculpture, rediscovered in 1489 and put on display in the Vatican Palace in 1511—where it remains on display today—proved to be exceptionally influential, informing Renaissance art as well as art of our own day. Considered to be emblematic of aesthetic perfection during the 18th and 19th Centuries, the present copy recreates the quality seen in the original.
