Cressent, Charles (French, 1685-1768)

Charles Cressent was a French furniture maker, or ébeniste, sculptor and fondeur-ciseleur working in the 18th Century. Cressent was the son of Francois Cressent, sculptor to the King, and he trained in the workshop of André-Charles Boulle, the famous ébiniste to King Louis XIV of France. This training and artistic surrounding has lead to him being claimed as one of the best decorative artists of the 18th Century.

Cressent was famed and celebrated for the sculptural quality of his bronze mounts, and he famously made many pieces of furniture for Louis, the son of Philip II, Duke of Orléans, as well the casting of an extremely important bronze bust of the Duke.

Pieces by Cressent can be found in the collection of Waddesdon Manor, UK, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, France.
