Diehl, Charles-Guillaume (German/French, 1811-1885)

Charles-Guillaume Diehl (1811-1885) was a highly prestigious 19th Century furniture maker, who is famous for his production of exceptionally designed cabinets. Originally of German origin, Diehl moved to Paris in 1840 and he established a large workshop, which boasted a workforce of around six hundred employees by 1870.

Diehl achieved success at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London and at all major international exhibitions thereafter, which garnered him a reputation for the production of high quality, unique pieces. Diehl’s luxury furniture was immensely popular with both Parisian and international elite clientele and his works remain highly prized to this day; many can be found in important collections and institutions worldwide, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
