Mounted by a large, sculptural figurative work of a seated maiden, draped in robes, resting her elbow on a globe with books to her feet, this beautiful piece is a large Charles X period mantel clock, cast in gilt-bronze with a later malachite veneer.
With a dial cast in enamel around a five-pointed star dial and Roman numerals, this fine antique timepiece is encased in a malachite veneered box, which is adorned and crestead with radiant, rich decorative elements in ormolu. It dates to c.1830, in the time of Charles X's reign in France, which was a subtler, softer style to the earlier Empire period, yet retaining much of its grace and grandeur.
