The folding screen is composed of six tall and narrow wooden parts. These are each divided into four tiers of panels, which vary in their shape. The panels are ornately carved with scrolling organic forms, which feature mythological beast heads in the lower square-shaped panels.
Reverse glass paintings have been inserted into the third tier of the screen’s panels. On the outer two ends, these glass paintings are tall and narrow, and are decorated with gold Chinese characters, bracketed above and below by mythical winged creatures, set against a navy ground.
The central four paintings are of the same height, but are wider than those on the ends. These feature beautiful painted depictions of Chinese figures in traditional clothing, practicing calligraphy, and enjoying one-another’s company. The figures stand before colourful and highly decorated Chinese buildings.
