Description

This charming sculpture of a cow laden with youths on its back is carved from hardwood. The cow, who stands on an intricately carved and pierced base, writhes underneath the three children who climb its haunches and frolic on its back. The cow, whose skin is exquisitely carved to imitate a real cowhide, turns his glass eye towards the amusements taking place on his backside. One child plays a flute like instrument, while the other two carry goods in baskets and by hand. The entire piece is wonderfully textured and finished to highlight the beautiful, warm tones inherent to the hardwood.
