This Chinese four-section folding screen is crafted from Hongmu, a Chinese hardwood, and nephrite, one of the two minerals commonly known as jade. The deep green hue of the nephrite balances beautifully with the rich wooden tones of the Hongmu.
Each section of the screen contains five rectangular nephrite panels. The wooden fictive frames that encompass each panel are carved with scrolling foliate motifs, the forms of which correspond to the pierced openwork that adorns the bottom of the screen. The nephrite panels throughout the screen are beautifully carved with exceptionally fine portrayals of distinctively Chinese landscapes. Each vignette contains a elements of landscape, such as trees, mountains, or rivers, as well as animals and some human figures.
