This very fine Russian icon depicts Christ Pantocrator, or 'Christ the Almighty', one of the most common images of Christ in Orthodox Christianity.

Description

The icon depicts Christ Pantocrator, or Christ the Almighty, holding a bible in his left hand, and with his right hand in a gesture of blessing, all housed in a carved wooden frame. There 'oklad', or protective covering of the icon, is made from cloisonne enamel and silver gilt. There are cloisonne enamel decorations behind Christ's head, in the form of a halo, and at each corner of the piece. They are decorated with geometric floral patterns. The piece is set within a carved wooden frame.
