While the exact origins of this delightful miniature box are unclear, it possibly having been intended as some sort of spice box, what is evident is the meticulous skill and artistry of the maker's use of silver filigree to craft it. Continental and dating from the early twentieth century, the spiral and leaf shaped patterns that make up the box's walls and structure are wonderfully rendered; a small figure stands atop and the box, and small flowering bulbs are placed around the lid.
Delicate silver chains hold the lid once the box is opened. Silver filigree consists of small beads and fine twisted threads, and this box is a superb example of the elegant and charming pieces that can be made in this impressive technique.
