This beautiful chess set, crafted from cut lead crystal, features one side in brilliant cobalt blue and the opposing side in clear crystal. Each of the 32 pieces is raised by a ribbed baluster stem above a cog-cut circular base. The kings and queens feature crenelated crowns; the bishops are topped with forms resembling the traditional bishop’s mitre; the knights feature abstracted horse heads; the rooks, not raised by a stem or lifted on a separate base, are formed as castellated towers; while the pawns are formed as pinched balusters.
The pieces were produced by Webb Corbett around the time the firm was subsumed into Royal Doulton in 1969.
