Description

This magnificent five-piece centrepiece suite is by the important English silversmiths Horace Woodward & Co. Ltd. of London. The suite is comprised of a three-bowl epergne, two larger tazze comports, and two smaller tazze comports.

The epergne is formed as a raised and elongated base hosting a large central bowl set above a plinth-form support, with a smaller flanking bowl on either side supported by sculptural mermaids. The surfaces of the bowls are finished with chased and repoussé foliage, with an undulating lip all around. The plinth supporting the central bowl is engraved with a stylised ‘B’, while the mermaids to either side are rendered in remarkable detail.

The two pairs of comports are similarly formed, each with chased and repoussé foliage to the surfaces of the bowls, and each raised on plinth-form bases similarly adorned and also engraved with ‘B’.

The silver is fully hallmarked, with lion passant, leopard head, and H W & CO., LD., k.

Epergne: Height 27cm, width 45cm, depth 26cm
