This magnificent Victorian ormolu mounted table features a removable veneered tabletop that opens to reveal a planter, transforming the table into a jardinière.
This late Victorian jardinière table is crafted from a variety of woods and is mounted with intricately cast ormolu (gilt bronze) elements. The table is supported by four turned and tapered legs, the shafts fluted and inset with ormolu mounts cast with foliate motifs. The legs are joined by a lower curvilinear and elongated X-shaped stretcher and stand on castor wheels. The capitals and tori of the leg shafts are mounted with ormolu foliate bands, as are the feet above the wheels. The table apron is inlaid with a variety of veneers, including burled fruitwood, and is fitted with elaborately cast ormolu foliage mounts to the centre and at each edge.
The tabletop is similarly finished: the centre is veneered with a symmetrical burl and is bordered by thin strips of alternating lighter and darker wood veneers, while its edge is inset with an encompassing foliate ormolu mount. The tabletop is removable, opening to reveal a lined planting container—allowing this table to turn into a jardinière.
