This magnificent dual picture frame is crafted in the manner of Fabergé. The frame, rectangular in shape with a rounded crown, is wrought from exquisite purple guilloché enamel encompassed by a gold border cast with the Greek key pattern and mounted at each corner with white gemstone inlaid crown motifs.
The guilloché enamel of the frame is mounted throughout with gold elements. To the top centre, underneath the rounded crown, sits a composition wrought from gold containing a central fountain from which two mythical birds drink. The upper left and right corners of the frame feature oblong laurel wreathes, also crafted from gold, each wreath encompassing a stylised motif of twin birds mounted with dark gemstones. The left and right sides of the frame are mounted with gold arrows and quiver designs, while the centre, between the two photographs, is set with a gold emblem of a classical vase. Most ornately, below this vase emblem is mounted another dual bird motif, this time profusely inset with gemstones.
The frame contains two greyscale photographs: one a portrait of Tsar Nicholas II and the other of the Tsar with his wife and child. The frame is supported by an easel backing and is contained by a velvet-lined wooden case. The inside of the top lid of the case is inscribed with a spurious Fabergé mark.
